2. Sulastin‘s Thought

Sulastin had a unique view on the importance of studying literature. It could be seen at her installation as a professor of philology at the general meeting of senate of the University of Gadjah Mada, on March 19, 1981. She remarked that using daily language would be considered successful when the message of communication could be received. But in literature works, reaching the message of communication is not the last goal, because each used word and sign has an important function that needs to be analyzed further. For instance, the using of full stop (.) and comma (,) must be given serious attention because, in the works of literature, they have a specific function and provide a certain meaning. Therefore, it is necessary to hold in-dept study on literature in order to increase the quality of the works of literature. But that goal merely can be reached via deepening the study of literature that is capable of arranging some theories of literature and formulating regulations that would be used as a basic frame to understand texts.

For Sulastin, literature is a tool that molds the life of human being. In a modern literature, the goal dreamed to be reached is how the literature could be accepted by the society, and how it could influence them. Through this method the relation between society and literature might occur in which the literature could give whether negative or positive influence to them. Therefore, the literature should be upheld and studied from which the members of society could take some benefits and understand the meaning of society. The literature obviously describes many aspects of life, including the relation between societies, between society and individual, and between the members of society.

There are various ways used by researcher in studying the literature. They, more often than not, began to study it by stressing its trait of object, the literature as a part of art. But for several cases, many researchers paid more attention on its author, history, social and cultural context. And in another case, analyzing the literature, several researchers used other disciplines such as history, philosophy, linguistic, anthropology, sociology, psychology etc…In her speech, Sulastin explained the details of one discipline related to language and literature, namely philology. This discipline, she added, encompasses many aspects of national life such as language, literature and culture, and helps us to recognize texts comprehensively, and then put them in the frame of history, culture and literature of a nation. The most important step that should be done by the researchers is choosing the complete and original text. Ignoring this important method, according to Sulastin, the researcher may not reveal the deepest essence of the text. This surely will cause a partial study of history and culture of nation.
