Berendoi Ceremony (Malaysia)

a:3:{s:3:

Berendoi is an act of lulling a baby by moving the cradle backward and forward conducted as an expression of thankfulness toward God who has bestowed the baby to the family. This tradition is still upheld by the resident of the state of Perlis, Kedah and Perak, in Malaysia. A song accompanying the ceremony is Dendang Siti Fatimah. Although the song‘s title in all states is clearly same, its lyric is performed differently.

3. Lyric of the Song

In Berendoi ceremony, the lyrics of the song consist of praises upon the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), the struggle of the mother during her pregnancy and the process of giving birth, and advices for children. In this present day, some lyrics have been adapted with a contemporary condition, such as (1) Tuhan Rabbul‘alamin (God of the Universe), (2) Anak di Dalam Buaian (Baby in a Cradle), (3) Ayuhai Anak Cahaya Mata, (4) Kebesaran Allah (the Great of God) and many other lyrics. The following example is the lyric taken from Anak di Dalam Buaian:

Ayuhai anak di dalam buaian,
Pejamkan mata jangan tangiskan,
Lagu Berendoi kami dendangkan,
Di dalam majlis tanda kesyukuran,

Lamalah sudah kami menanti,
Namun engkau tak kunjung tiba,
Dengan takdir ilahi rabbi,
Kini engkau telah menjelma.
