University of Science Malaysia Open Up Scholarship for Research on Tun Seri Lanang

MelayuOnline.com – As a part of the endeavor to continuously preserve and study Malay culture, the University of Science Malaysia (USM) open up a scholarship program for research on Tun Seri Lanang, a Malay historical figure. This scholarship is set for those holding Sarjana Muda (Bachelor’s degree) and Sarjana (Honours degree) who aim to continue their studies for Sarjana and Doctorate on Philosophy respectively. Registration opens today until April 9 2010.

Tun Seri Lanang is a Malay prominent scholar and statesman. The Malaysian (Johor) born éminence grise founded a center for education and Islamic teachings in Samalanga which is now Bireuen, Aceh, Indonesia. He is remembered for his service to Aceh Darussalam Kingdom (he was Sultan Iskandar Muda’s counselor as well as the king of Samalanga) and for building a center for education and Islamic teachings. However, it is his book Sulalatus Salatin (Malay Annals) that makes him one of the great Malay figures of all time.

Prof. Dr. Muhammad Hj. Saleh of USM once stated, “Sulalatus Salatin is the richest and most comprehensive source of the history of Malay nations. As a literary work, the book has no equal.  There is a rich imagination, precise and detailed delineation in it, while its humors, love stories, and its description of Malay Kings genealogy will rest in the mind of Malay people forever.”

Sulalatus Salatin is a central mosaic of the whole picture of Malay identity. Therefore, research on Tun Seri Lanang is considered of great importance for Malay studies and Malay Culture preservation. The Tun Seri Lanang Research Program is expected to become a wide path for contemporary Malay intellectuals to participate in the efforts.
