Enhancing Skills On Managing Manuscripts
Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei Darussalam - The Brunei History Centre is organising a workshop to enhance the knowledge and skills on translating, cataloguing and editing Malay manuscripts.
A press statement issued bythe centre said thatthe workshop is attended by 17 officers and staff of departments under the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, namely Brunei History Centre, Language and Literature Bureau and Brunei Museum Department. It is facilitated by Professor Dr E Ulrich Kratz, head of Indonesia and the Malay Language Centre, School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London, United Kingdom. The workshop focuses on teaching the methods of translation, cataloguing, editing and reviewing old Malay manuscripts that are under the safekeeping of the Brunei History Centre and other departments.
"There are still many old Malay manuscripts stored in these departments which are not known to the public or researchers due to the lack of philology skill approach in determining the origin of the texts, the texts writing dates, use of language and writing as well as types of paper and ink used," the statement said.
The workshop is also designed to teach participants to produce essays and articles on old Malay manuscripts so that these findings can be made public-- Courtesy of The Brunei Times (Rasidah Abu Bakar)
