Sail Banda committee inspects Kisar via Kupang

Ambon, Indonesia - Sail Banda 2010 local committee members leave for Kisar island in Southwest Maluku (MBD) district via Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara, on Monday to inspect the location.

Kisar Island is slated to be one of the locations of the upcoming international marine event of Sail Banda, and therefore the committee had planned to inspect the area this week.

Event coordinator Cak Saimima said on Monday that the members of Sail Banda local committee would leave for Kupang on Monday and on to Kisar the next day on Tuesday.

"I have coordinated the team members to evaluate the preparation of the event location, clean water availability, and telecommunication facility in Kisar," Saimima said.

The committee members planned to visit Kisar last Friday but they postponed the plan because of bad weather.

Saimima said the postponement on Friday was based on a warning from MBD acting district head Franky Renyaan about high waves and a thunder storm that were preventing even ships and airplanes from coming to Kisar island.

Therefore the team members will leave for Kisar by plane on Monday via Kupang and then on to Kisar the next day.

Saimima said the team wanted to visit Kisar to obtain first hand information about preparations on the island for the Sail Banda event.

The inspection group consisted of Governor Karel Albert Ralahalu, Pattimura Military Commander Maj Gen Hatta Syarifuddin, Maluku Police Chief Brig Gen Totoy Herawan Indra, and Provincial Legislative Assembly (DPR) Chairman Fatani Sohilouw.

He said the visit to Kisar was intended to prepare the location at one of the outlying islands in Southwest Maluku for the undersea ceremony to commemorate Independence Day on August 17, 2010.

According to him, more than 1,000 youths from different places would come to Kisar to luster up the Sail Banda event by putting up red-and-white flags at several outlying islands in Southwest Maluku district. (Uu.O001/H-NG/F001/P003)
