Nusantara Poet’s Meet Held In Brunei

Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei Darussalam - Malay poems nowadays lack a place in the hearts of young people in the community because poems are considered as a means of expressing one's heart's content but possesses no material or commercial value to them said the State Mufti of Brunei Darussalam yesterday during the 4th Nusantara Poet's Gathering 2010 held at the Persekutuan Guru-Guru Melayu Brunei (PGGMB) building.

State Mufti Pehin Datu Seri Maharaja Dato Paduka Seri Setia (Dr) Ustaz Hj Abdul Aziz Juned (Adi Rumi) said yesterday in his speech that as the younger generation lacked the interest in poems, the cause is due to the lack of understanding of the meaning and purpose of the poems especially for those in Bahasa Melayu.

"Poetry is composition, a collection of words that are formed as sajak, syair, pantun and others," he said. "The function of these poems are to deliver the messages of one's feelings, mind and soul. If the message is powerful, meaningful and great then the same goes for the poem itself."

He stated that in the early 50s, the talk of Islamic teachings found in Malay literature had already been brought to the attention of modern people at the time.

The Nusantara Poet's Gathering is a collection of poets from the Southeast Asia region in particular and was first established at Medan in 2007, mainly consisting of Indonesia, Malaysia and Brunei Darussalam.

Indonesia was represented by several authors in the distribution of regional organisations, the National Writers Association (PENA) was representing Malaysia and finally ASTERAWANI representing Brunei Darussalam in the informal panels.

There are currently a total of 150 members consisting of 34 Bruneian members and 126 from Indonesia and Malaysia.

This is the first time the Sultanate has been selected to host the Nusantara Poet's Gathering. The first two years were hosted by Indonesia followed by Malaysia in the third year.

This year's event was founded by independent non-governmental cultural body of literary and cultural communities of Malaysia and Brunei with the theme dubbed "Sustaining Life and a Green Environment".

Also present at the ceremony was Minister of Home Affairs Pehin Udana Khatib Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Hj Badaruddin Pengarah Dato Paduka Hj Othman and his wife as well as the Head of Asterawani Professor Madya Ampuan Dr Hj Brahim Ampuan Hj Tengah.-- Courtesy of The Brunei Times
