Muslims Back Core Curriculum For All Mosques In Singapore

Singapore - Muslim officials, teachers and parents are backing a drive to get all 68 mosques in Singapore to follow a core curriculum by 2010, news reports said on Monday. The programme, called "ALIVE" for Learning Islamic Values Everyday, emphasizes interactive learning and character development.

It was initially launched at selected mosques.

Minister-in-charge of Muslim Affairs Yaacob Ibrahim said the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore would contribute 500,000 Singapore dollars (328,000 US dollars) to train teachers to conduct religious classes effectively and help needy families send their children.

"We want an Islamic education programme that is relevant to the lives of Muslims in Singapore," The Straits Times quoted him as saying at a dialogue.

"We want the content to be well suited for all age groups, and for the programme to be as learner-centred as possible," he added.

The programme focuses on Muslim beliefs and practices. It stresses life skills including responsibilities in a multi-religious society.

The city-state‘s predominantly Chinese population includes 15 per cent who are Muslim Malays.
