DBP to Organise International Language & Culture Congress

DBP to Organise International Language & Culture Congress

Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei Darussalam - The Language and Literature Bureau (DBP) yesterday announced that it will hold an International Language and Culture Congress in conjunction with the establishment and to commemorate the 25th SilVer Jubilee of Malay Language as part of the 1959 Constitution.

Acting Director of DBP Hajah Aminah bte Haji Momin said the congress targets around 1,000 participants.

They will be coming from regional countries such as Asean and European countries.

The congress will be open for registration from September 17-21 next year.

Hajah Aminah also announced some of the upcoming activities such as the Creative Bahana Prize presentation on November 20, with prizes sponsored by Brunei Shell Petroleum (BSP), seminar/workshops and MASTERA Pantun Festival from December 14-20, and the Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah Foundation-DBP organised 5th literature meeting also in December.

The youth forum for DBP library members (Kelab Muda Mudi) will be held November 13.

According to Hajah Aminah said that it is important to preserve and secure the usage of Malay language as lingua franca and as official language of Brunei Darussalam.

The events are DBP's efforts to encourage the department and provide exposure to publications.

Preserving the Malay language in this era is quite crucial, as according to UNESCO the usage of mother tounge is slowly fading away.

The influence of foreign language such as English will indirectly encourage one to use two languages at the same time.

This will affect the richness of one's mother tounge that might slowly be forgotten by the natives. Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
