Call for Bureau to Disseminate Local Literature

Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei Darussalam - The Language and Literature Bureau needs to act in enriching and disseminating local literature in order to counter balance the over-flow of foreign reading materials that attract the youths.

According to a report by Radio Televisyen Brunei (RTB) last night, Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Pehin Orang Kaya Pekerma Laila Diraja Dato Paduka Hj Hazair Hj Abdullah said that the measure was necessary to produce more creative literature writers, who possessed good writing skills and the potential to produce high quality local literature.

The minister was speaking during the DBP-BSP Bahana Creative prize presentation ceremony yesterday where he pointed out that literature writings could encourage the community to think and act according to the direction and objective of upholding the sovereignty, development and survival of the nation.

He also emphasised the need for the bureau to have an equipped, comprehensive and up-to-date database on the list of literature writers and figures and their writings so it can be used as a yard-stick on the development of local literature and also a source of reference on the development and understanding of the writings, he said.

Five winners of the Bahana Creative Prize in the poetry, syair and quartrain categories received their prizes. Prizes were also presented to the winners in the Official and Correspondence Letter-Writing Competitions to mark the Golden Jubilee of the establishment of the Malay Language as the National Official Language in the 1959 Brunei State Constitution, RTB reports.
