Brunei Leaves Lasting Impression on Singaporean Visitors

Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei Darussalam - This year's Brunei-Singapore Adventure Camp was an apparent success, according to the head of the Singapore contingent who marvelled at the achievements they had made during a brief interview with the Bulletin on Sunday during the camp's closing ceremony.

Carmen Leong, an officer in Singapore's Education Ministry and head of this year's contingent, expressed her delight at this year's outcome, saying that they had achieved their targets of promoting an understanding of the Bruneian Malay culture and the Singaporean Malay culture which have many similarities.

"We really love the cultural part where we got to go to the different places of interest to learn more about the Bruneian culture.

"We will never forget this morning's nature walk, where we got to see how similar the flora and fauna are for both of our countries, and we really had a lot of fun last night in the small theatre at the Oil and Gas Discovery Centre in Seria. I really liked the ambience there and the kids really bonded with each other during dinner," Leong explained.

"Like all camps, it is hard to break the ice between the students in the beginning, especially when you know you're going to another country. The students were a bit shy at first, they weren't sure how to react, but after a while with a few games, it just worked.

Also, the competition helped," she said laughing.

"The beauty of this camp is that the group size is not too big. This time we really could see the two countries working together for the success of the camp.

"For the students, it's probably their first trip to Brunei. I think the key achievement from the Singaporean students' part is they really learned how to respect other cultures and people from other countries with different practices. And I think that's one really huge learning point for our kids to bring back home.

"On the first day they were slightly unsure on how to behave, but now you can't even tell them apart, who is Singaporean and who is Bruneian. And that's the beauty of it: They learned a lot about how the Bruneians embrace their culture and religion. And we would love to come back again and again."
