Paeni Proposed for UNESCO Commitee
Makassar, Indonesia - South Sulawesi cultural scholar Mukhlis Paeni has been nominated to become one of 14 members of the international advisory committee of Memory of the World (MOW), an organization under United Nations Educational Scientific Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
The chairman of Indonesian committee of MOW, Jan Sopaheluwakan, said on Tuesday that the proposal nominating Paeni was based on his contributions to Indonesian culture.
“He’s a driving force and an inspiration in the world of culture, especially for South Sulawesi province,” Sopaheluwakan said, as quoted by Antara news agency.
Indonesia’s MOW committee could propose names for the committee but the appointment would be under the discretion of UNESCO director general Irina Bokova, Sopaheluwakan said.
MOW is aimed at safeguarding, protecting and facilitating access to and the use of documentary heritage, especially heritage that is rare and endangered. UNESCO established the organization in 1992 against “collective amnesia” on cultural heritage.
The MOW program is administered by a three-tiered structure: international, regional and national. The MOW international advisory committee is the highest in the structure, tasked with providing holistic guidelines and recommendations for the entire MOW program.
