Brunei to Take Part in First Tawau Cultural Festival

Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei Darussalam - Brunei is to participate in the inaugural Tawau Cultural Festival to be staged from January 14-15.

Tawau Municipal Council (MPT) President Ismail Mayakob was reported by Sabah Daily Express as saying that it was going to be grand, being a regional event involving neighbouring countries.

"Brunei and Indonesia have agreed to take part, while Singapore and the Philippines will send representatives," he said. Sabah Chief Minister, Datuk Seri Panglima Musa Hj Aman will also be invited to officiate it on January 15, the report said.

At least 20 communities will showcase their culture at the Festival which will also feature telematches, lego competition, cultural exhibition, food camp and so on

During the parade from the town padang to the MPT compound, which is the event's highlight, each of the 20 ethnic groups comprising 100 people will be dressed in their respective traditional costumes.

Ismail urged those turning up to witness the event to also come in traditional dress to make the occasion more memorable.

The festival, themed "Culture for Regional Peace" will also feature popular local artistes.

Ismail said participants from outside Tawau will arrive on January 13 and will be brought to visit local places of interest on the next day.

On the evening of January 14, they will take part in the full-dress rehearsal at the town padang.

Assemblyman Datuk Tawfiq Abu Bakar Titingan will officiate a telematch at the town padang on the morning of January 15.

The event proper which takes place in the evening will begin with the procession or parade, followed by a cultural show and officiating ceremony by the chief minister. The event will be capped by a fireworks display which will light up the Tawau sky.

Among the ethnic groups taking part are Tidong, Chinese, Murut, Penan, Lundayeh, Indonesia, Bajau, Bugis, India, Jawa, Toraja, Badan Kesenian Johor, Buton, Iban, Cocos, Suluk, Pakistan, Bolongan, Timor, Kadazan, Arab and Bisaya.
