Indonesia - UNESCO Recognizes I Lagaligo as World’s Heritage

Makassar, Indonesia - United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization declared that Bugis’ original literary works named I Lagaligo as one of the Memory of the World (MOW) or world’s cultural heritage.

Mukhlis Paeni, an Indonesian culture-bearer, said that MOW Award from the United Nations which charged education, science and world culture is about to be released and submitted in the next May at UN headquarters in Paris, France. Besides I Lagaligo, as Mukhlis explained, the other national literary works that will be awarded as well are Babad Diponegoro from Java and Mak Yong from Kepulauan Riau Province. Those three literary works have been registered by UNESCO and will get MOW.

The same appreciations have been awarded for Batik, Kris and recently for Angklung. We appreciated the efforts of South Sulawesi culture-bearers who had been struggling hard to reach this appreciation as well as recognition thus far,” said Mukhlis who is also the Head of the Indonesian Institute of Film Censorship. With this MOW award, Mukhlis expected, world has officially admitted there is a great civilization derived from South Sulawesi.
