Gulintangan Workshop

Gulintangan Workshop

Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei Darussalam - Heritage Day is celebrated every 18th of April. It is not only a celebration but is also an opportunity for all countries of the world to display whatever legacies they have, whether tangible or otherwise such as verbal tradition, visual art, or performing arts involving musical instruments. Towards ensuring that such traditions will not be diminished by modernisation, a Gulintangan Workshop was held this morning.

The workshop was officially opened by the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and sports, Dato Paduka Haji Jemat.

More than 160 teachers of primary and secondary schools and colleges throughout the country are attending the three-week workshop that aims to promote the music and technique of playing the Gulintangan, a traditional musical instrument. The playing of the Gulintangan produces an original unique kind of music from the ethnic Malay.

The objective of the workshop is to raise public awareness in preserving and developing the homeland heritage, appreciating and deeply understanding the cultural heritage art, apart from giving teachers guidance and assistance in teaching and monitoring the art of playing the Gulintangan at their respective schools continuously.

The workshop is organised by the Cultural and Art Section of the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports with the cooperation of the Co-Curriculum Education Department of the Ministry of Education.
