Jogja Java Carnival Costs Rp2 Billion
Yogyakarta - Yogyakarta’s anniversary this year will be enlivened by the Jogja Java Carnival which carries the theme, “Yogyakarta to be a Wonder of the World.” The carnival is budgeted at Rp2.05 billion, which will feature: the main show - a Jogja mozaic parade; festivals in 45 districts; and a finale that will be held on October 22. “We will involve every municipality to support this fourth carnival,” said Yulia Rustiyaningsih, the Yogyakarta Culture and Tourism Board director, yesterday.
In addition, there will be five supporting events: a Javanese fashion festival—Yogyakarta-style, painting and coloring competition, batik fashion show, bike community contest, a marching band, and a national marching band competition. The events will be held in observance of Yogyakarta’s 255th anniversary on October 7.
The Rp2.05 billion funds will be allocated from Yogyakarta’s regional budgets (APBD), to be disbursed as follows: Rp1.5 billion for the Jogja Java Carnival, Rp100 million for the Jogja mozaic parade and Rp450 million to subsidize the municipalities.
Yulia stated that the main parade will be enlivened by cultural and arts performances from various countries and different regions in Indonesia while the supporting parade will be brightened by cultural groups from Yogyakarta’s municipalities. Several art groups that have confirmed their attendance come from Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, and China. “In this year’s Jogja Carnival celebration we will sell VVIP tickets to reduce the financing burden from the regional budget,” she said.
There will be two sections reserved for tourists: the VVIP seats in the North Square of the Sultan’s Palace and in front of Vredeburg Fortress. The tickets will be sold for Rp150,000 for the main seats, Rp200,000 for priority main seats, Rp250,000 for VIPs, and Rp500,000 for VVIPs.
According to Ferry Astono, the Yogyakarta Anniversary Committee chairman, the city’s anniversary celebration will be held on October 6-22. “This will be an annual event that is expected to attract tourists,” he added.
Meanwhile, Herry Zudianto, the Yogyakarta mayor, hopes that Yogyakarta’s anniversary will be celebrated by all local communities, including the public, businessmen and the officials. “The Jogja Java Carnival, which will start in the evening, is the only night carnival in the world,” said Herry. The cultural parade of Yogyakarta’s anniversary will coincide with the wedding of one of Sultan’s daughters.
