Cultural Exchange Summer Camp Held in Indonesia
Tainan, Taiwan - A delegation of students from Southern Taiwan University in TainanCity is participating in a multicultural summer camp in the Indonesian city of Singkawang, Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) officials said Wednesday.
The July 11-15 summer camp is taking place under a MOFA-sponsored "Taiwan Youth Ambassador" program aimed at promoting international cultural exchanges, the officials said.
The youth ambassadors from Southern Taiwan University have designed a series of activities featuring aspects of Taiwanese culture such as education, the arts and pop culture, the officials said, adding that Indonesian participants will also have the chance to get a taste of Taiwanese cuisine.
According to MOFA officials, the mayor of the Indonesian city led a group of other city officials that attended the opening ceremony of the summer camp.
Singkawang -- a town in the hills close to the sea and an estuary -- is located at the province of West Kalimantan or Kalimantan Barat, Indonesia. It is located at about 145 km north of Pontianak, the provincial capital, and is surrounded by the Pasi, Poteng and Sakok mountains.
Singkawang has a special relationship with Taiwan, officials from Taiwan's representative office in Indonesia said. It signed a cooperative agreement with the northern Taiwan city of Yangmei in 2010. Moreover, they added, more than 35,000 women from the city have married men in Taiwan over the past 30 years.
