Brunei Partakes in 12th Asian Arts Festival

Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei Darussalam - A delegation from the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports recently attended the 12th Asian Arts Festival in Chonqing, Sichuan province of China.

Led by Acting Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Datin Paduka Hjh Adina binti Hj Othman, the delegation attended several programmes, among them the Ministerial Cultural Meeting China and Asean (10+1), Asia Cultural Forum (10+3) Theme Conference, China and Asean Traditional Woven Splendor Exhibition, as well as art performances.

The Ministerial Cultural Meeting China and Asean was chaired by Cai Wu, the Culture Minister of China. Policy wise, one of the outcomes of the meeting was an agreement to construct a mechanism for Asean+1 (China), which supported the call to set up a specific convention in the field of culture, aligned with the purpose to enhance social interaction among the diverse cultures in the Asean region.

The meeting also agreed to propose a programme, activity and action plan in a shared commitment to enhance coordination in the field of culture.

Datin Paduka Hjh Adina in her speech stressed the importance of the dynamics of culture since it strengthens the role to stimulate friendships and high spirits of unity among member countries towards peace and prosperity.

She said, Brunei supports efforts towards increased cooperation in culture, both in the continent and internationally. The 12nd Asian Arts Festival, she emphasised, is recognised as a platform to preserve the traditions and legacy of the culture to be appreciated by the rest of the world.

Brunei's participation at the festival marked its commitment as stated in the Memorandum of Understanding, along with other cultural exchange projects.

At the same time, Brunei welcomed and supported the exchange of expertise in stage arts, maintenance techniques and cultural research methodologies all of which focused on improving know-how enhancement and talent growth.

The acting minister also took the opportunity to attend separate courtesy calls with Mr Edmund Ho Hao Wah, Vice Chairman of the 11th National Committee of the CPPPCC and Mr Bo Xilai, CPC Chongqing Committee Secretary/Member of the Politburo of the CPC.

During the Asia Cultural Forum, the discussions which revolved around the theme 'Development through Diversity and Harmonisation of Arts and Culture in Asia' covered several subtopics including exchange and cooperation ofAsia culture parallel with the development of arts, harmonisation of Asian culture, legacy preservation, unfamiliar culture practices in Asia Pacific and developments in the preservation of the Asian culture.

The?forum was participated by Asean members, China, Japan and the Republic of Korea.

Brunei also participated in the China and Asean Traditional Woven Splendor Exhibition during the festival. Various clothing?materials and woven traditional clothing and handicraft were displayed at the exhibition
