Raja Permaisuri Agong Launches Malay Midwifery Encyclopaedia

KUALA LUMPUR- The incessant urgings of friends seeking herbal remedies and traditional treatment prompted Datin Sharifah Anisah Barakbah to delve into the field and her success is now documented in a book.

The chairman and founder of the Nona Roguy group of companies took lessons in herbal medicine and traditional treatment from her mother to help women overcome health problems that could wreck their marriage.

"This book is based on my years of experience in traditional medicine because a lot of women had come to see to seek help. I just couldn`t bear to see women in trouble," she told reporters after the launch of her first book `Ensiklopedia Perbidanan Melayu` (Malay Midwifery Encyclopaedia) here today.

It was launched by the Raja Permaisuri Agong Tuanku Nur Zahirah. Also present was Parliamentary Secretary to the Prime Minister`s Department Datuk Dr Mashitah Ibrahim.

Having been involved in traditional medicine for 45 years, Sharifah Anisah who is now in her 60`s said her interest to write the book was driven by her intention to preserve the Malay heritage.

"For my research, I talked to many elderly people and more than ten midwives. I also asked them to massage my body to experience the treatment," she added.

Sharifah Anisah who took five years to complete the book said she was in the midst of translating the book into English to penetrate the international market while introducing Malay traditional medicine to the world.

Other then covering topics from conception, birth, baby-care to confinement, the hard-cover book also contains tips on use of herbs in personal care complete with pictures and other illustrations.

The encyclopaedia published by Utusan Publication and Distributors Sdn Bhd is priced at RM145 each.
