Polishing the Green Jewel of Brunei

Temburong District, which is known as the green jewel of the country, is one of the eco-tourism destinations in Southeast Asia, and is popular amongst domestic and foreign tourists who enjoy its natural beauty. The land, still covered by about 80 per cent of rainforests, promises to provide visitors with exciting and valuable experiences.

In an effort to boost economic activities, the residents from the Consultative Council of Kg Belais and Kg Buda Buda in Mukim Bokok have developed a new tourism initiative for visitors by constructing fishing and recreational huts about 300 metres along the Panduran River that separates Temburong District and Limbang in Sarawak. The location is a good place to find prawns known as "udang galah" and freshwater fish such as "belida", "dalak" and many more.

There are 18 fishing huts in the area. The huts are made of traditional materials such as wood and bamboo, built in different shapes and sizes to suit all kinds of visitors.

Each of the huts are equipped with a fishing corner, tables and chairs, as well as an area for barbeque activities that can accommodate about five people.

The place is expected to attract a large number of people, especially domestic tourists, as well as fishing enthusiasts in the country. Those who decide to spend a night in the huts are advised to register their names at the Kampung Belais co-operative shop located next to the mosque.

The project is also in line with the government‘s vision to promote local ventures that will develop the economy and improve the standard of living of Bruneian communities.
