Ideal Library for Establishing Malay Civilization in the Future

Ideal Library for Establishing Malay Civilization in the Future

Yogyakarta, MelayuOnline.com- On Saturday (2/2/2008) 2 p.m., MelayuOnline.com invited Lasa Hs., a librarian from Gadjah Mada University in a fortnightly discussion “Library and its development.”

The discussion talked about building an ideal library, conventional or digital library, with hope that there will be a good library to meet people‘s needs of knowledge or information. “A library is a need for people seeking for and improving knowledge or information. However, only few people who care of its development. Such fact is a consequence of lack financial support from government.” Lasa said. He also added the few numbers of skillful librarians may also become one of many causes the heading off library development.

While there are few people paying attention to the library development, Balai Kajian dan Pengembangan Budaya Melayu-BKPBM (the Center for Research and Development of Malay Culture) has great intention to build an ideal library to encourage the research on Malay studies. It is necessary to establish a good library on Malay studies including Malay classic literature even contemporary Malay studies. Hence, further development of library demands two versions of library that are conventional and digital library.

In Balai Melayu, the office building of BKPBM, there has developed two versions of library, conventional library and digital (online) library on MelayuOnline.com. However, there are still several weak points on BKPBM‘s library management. Therefore, many questions came out from the participants of the discussion asking about the proper management towards a library.

“Building a good and an ideal library demands a specific book classification. However, there is no standard classification method applied in the world. Book classification depends on the categories which are available at BKPBM‘s library. In addition, MelayuOnline.com ought to publish its collections on the internet so that publics want to come and access directly. By that way, we may call it as a good and an ideal library,”  Lasa remarked.

From this two hours discussion, the new point of views toward the process of building a good and an ideal library appeared. Now is the time for MelayuOnline.com to apply the knowledge of building an ideal library for establishing Malay civilization in the future. (KM/brt/01/02-08)
