International Conference on Philippine Studies
The Eighth International Conference on Philippine Studies (Icophil) opens today at the Philippine Social Science Center in Quezon City with the theme "Philippine Studies for the 21st Century, New Meanings, Critiques, and Trajectories."
The conference seeks to reconceptualize Philippine Studies and chart new directions for the 21st century by reflecting on developments and discourses that shed light on Philippine realities in an increasingly globalized world.
Since 1989, the Icophil conference has been a quadrennial event at an international hosting institution, serving as a venue for scholars engaged in research on the general field of Philippine Studies. This year`s Icophil is hosted by the Philippine Studies Association (PSA) in conjunction with the International Philippine Studies Conferences Board (IPSCB) based at the University of Hawaii`s Center for Philippine Studies, with the Philippine Social Science Council (PSSC) as the conference secretariat.
Among the major topics lined up for the conference are: Theories and dimensions of analysis in Philippine studies; changing Philippine institutions, ideologies, practices, and technologies; histories, cultures, identities; archaeology and heritage studies; and colonial discourse and postcolonial studies.
We congratulate the Philippine Studies Association led by its President, Dr. Bernardita R. Churchill, the International Philippine Studies Conferences Board based at the University of Hawaii`s Center for Philippine Studies led by its Chairman Dr. Belinda A. Aquino, and the Philippine Social Science Council led by its Chairman Dr. Filomeno V. Aguilar Jr., Officers and Members, on the occasion of their Eighth International Conference on Philippine Studies and wish them success in all their endeavors.
