Sticky Betawi heritage

Sticky Betawi heritage

Jakarta - Idul Fitri holidays have passed but precious time to be with relatives usually lingers on until the end of the month. Having "long time no see" relatives come for a reunion is not complete without serving traditional family dishes and delicacies.

For Betawi families, enjoying dodol, sticky rice cooked with brown sugar, is a must - a tradition that has come to equate dodol with Lebaran.

In the old days, however, dodol - widely produced in old Jakarta's home industries -- was a daily snack, a coffee mate in the afternoon. The modern food industry has taken away many traditional markets so that a snack such as dodol is now hard to find. Nowadays in Jakarta only a few loyal families continue to produce this delicacy. Bu Mamas is one of them. Snuggled in the dense Condet area of East Jakarta, the simple factory which is also bu Mamas' home, receives many orders for dodol during the fasting month.
