Three Indonesian universities are among world`s best 500

Depok, West Java - Three national universities, namely University of Indonesia (UI), Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), and Gadjah Mada University (UGM) are among the world`s best 500 with UI on the 287th rank, ITB in 315th, and UGM the 316th.

"The achievement is a gift for this country, concurrently with the 100th anniversary National Awakening Day," deputy chief spokesman of UI Devie Rahmawati, said here Tuesday.

Times Higher Education and QS World University Ranking (The QS World) had released an official announcement worldwide about the list of the 500 best universities in 2008.

According to Devie, through world class universities, Indonesia was back on track to stand at the same footing with other countries.

"This hard work is expected to reverse Indonesia to its previous achievement as the basis of education in Asia and even in the world," she said.

In the spirit of Youth Pledge Day`s 80th anniversary, Devie hoped the achievement could strengthen the confidence of the youths to constantly contribute to the building world civilization through national education.

"It is not impossible that in the future the youth around the world will enter UI as a world class university," she said adding that UI had taken several steps to meet the four criteria of the QS World.

The four are Quality Research, Quality Teaching, Graduate Employability and International Outlook.
