Safeguard Unesco sites
Alor Gajah - Any development within the core heritage zone in either Penang or Malacca should be referred to the Heritage Commission and the Ministry of Unity, Culture, Arts and Heritage, said its minister Datuk Mohd Shafie Apdal.
He said any plans to build high-rise buildings within the heritage zone in these World Heritage Cities could result in the recognition given by Unesco to be revoked.
"I have told the Penang and Malacca governments, via the respective chief ministers and the ministry secretary-general that we have to abide by the guidelines set by the Unesco.
"Both the state governments had worked very hard to get the recognition and it should be safeguarded," he said, commenting on reports that several high-rise projects which had been approved within the historic zone of inner city George Town by the previous administration would still be implemented.
