Research: Kupang most Indonesian corrupt city

Jakarta - Kupang, the provincial capital of East Nusa Tenggara, is the most corrupt city in Indonesia according to a recent research by global think tank Transparency International while the least corrupt is Yogyakarta, it was reported here Wednesday.

Transparency International Indonesia researcher, Frenky Simanjuntak, believed Kupang is the most corrupt because local businesses believed their government was not serious in corruption eradication.

Transparency International Indonesia also surveyed 15 institutions on the likelihood of accepting bribes. It was found that the police most likely accepted bribes followed by customs and the immigration.

Immanuel Umbu Rey from Kupang who now lives in Jakarta was not surprised by the survey.

"There is always havoc in Kupang, every segment of the society is corrupt. It has become a habit in Indonesia, although it`s not our culture," he said.

Meanwhile, Jakarta ranked 14th on the list of most corrupt cities among the 50 surveyed on the Perception Index of Corruption in Indonesia.

Respondents were asked how they perceived corruption in their local government and whether corruption was common or uncommon.

In December last year 3,841 people completed the survey proportionate to the population of the city.

The survey was funded by US AID as part of the Millennium Challenge Corporation threshold program. US AID spokesman Paul Simonett said the grant allowed more people to be surveyed and to increase the number of cities in the index.
