Jakartans Enjoy Car-Free Day Despite Shortened Duration
Jakarta- Jakarta residents remained enthusiastic to take part in the Car-Free Day on Sunday, although the city administration had reduced the duration of the event amid protests and safety concerns.
Starting this Sunday, the twice-a-month event will run from 6 a.m. to 12 p.m. rather than from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m., according to the city`s Environmental Management Agency (BPLHD).
Hundreds of residents enjoyed taking a stroll and participating in several events held along Jl. Sudirman and Thamrin.
Among the events held were bicycle races, fun games, music performances and futsal matches.
There was also a "Book on the Street" event held by the Indonesian Reading Forum, as part of the World Book Day festival held from April 23 to May 17.
Sandi, a resident of Bukit Duri, South Jakarta, said she came with her husband and two children, riding their bicycles from home.
"We left home early in the morning on our bicycles. We come here every time the city holds a Car Free Day," she said.
"We don`t mind the reduced hours, since we usually come in the morning and leave before 11 a.m."
The BPLHD said earlier the Car-Free Day was shortened to take on board the results of the agency`s review of the event. Desy Nurhayati
