Manado, North Sulawesi - National Organizing Committee of the World Ocean Conference (WOC) said that delegates of some 68 countries with international institutions have confirmed their attendance to Manado for the ocean conference.

Seven other countries have reported orally their coming to the conference, said organizing secretary Indroyono Susilo.

“As of May 7, some 1,530 participants, including foreign and local journalists have registered through online to attend the WOC,” he told The Jakarta Post from Manado on Thursday.

Six heads of state of the Coral Triangle Initiative (CTI) member countries have also confirmed their participation in the Summit.

They are Philippine President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, Solomon Island Prime Minister Derek Sikua, Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak, Timor Leste President Jose Ramos Horta, Papua New Guinea Prime Minister Sir Michael Somare and President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.

The WOC would be held on May 11 to May 16 expected to output the Manado Ocean Declaration, while the CTI heads of states would officially launched the regional CTI on May 16 aimed to help protect coral reefs from impacts of the climate change.

Manado will also host an International Symposium on Ocean Science, Technology and Policy, a Global Ocean Policy Day, and an International Ocean Science, Technology and Industry Exhibition. Adianto P. Simamora
