Photo Exhibition On Perak Sultanate Begins Monday In Ipoh
Paduka Sultan Azlan Shah

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia - A photo exhibition on the Perak sultanate with the theme “Sultan dan Rakyat” (Sultan and the People) will be held for six days from Aug 4 at the Town Hall in Ipoh.

The exhibition, which is organised by the Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) in collaboration with the Perak state government and the National Archives and supported by the Information Communication and Culture Ministry, is being held to coincide with and to commemorate the historic date of Aug 5, 1957 when the nine Malay rulers signed the Federation of Malaya Agreement.

Bernama chairman Datuk Seri Mohd Annuar Zaini, who is the chairman of the exhibition organising committee, said the exhibition, being held also to commemorate the 25-year reign of the Sultan of Perak, Sultan Azlan Shah, would display more than 100 pictures of His Royal Highness.

“The picture collection covers those taken from the day His Royal Highness ascended the throne as the 34th Sultan of Perak on Feb 3, 1984, to his reign as the ninth Yang di-Pertuan Agong from April 1989 to April 1994.

“The exhibition also shows pictures of his tenure as Lord President from 1982 until he stepped down from the post to ascend the Perak throne and His Royal Highness`s involvement in the Malaysian Hockey Federation from 1975 until 2004,” he said in a statement here Friday.

Mohd Annuar said the exhibition, which will be opened by Sultan Azlan Shah on Aug 4, would also feature photos relating to the background and history of the Perak sultanate. The exhibition will be open to the public from 10am to 6pm daily. Entry is free.

Mohd Annuar said that at the opening, a coffee table book entitled “Sebutir Permata di Takhta: Pemerintahan 25 Tahun Sultan Azlan Shah”, would be launched.

Published by the National Archives in conjunction with His Royal Highness`s 25-year reign as the Sultan of Perak, it is divided into four chapters.

The first chapter – “Permata DiZahir, Kecemerlangan Terukir” -- will focus on the sultan`s early days, growing-up years, his marriage and family life.

The second – “Permata Digilap, Sinarannya Gemerlap” -- revolves around his career from after graduating with a law degree from the University of Nottingham, United Kingdom, until he ascends the Perak throne in 1984.

The third and final chapters – “Permata Bercahaya, Menyinar Semesta” and “Dirgahayu Duli Tuanku” -- highlight Sultan Azlan Shah`s achievements in carrying out his royal duties and as the Head of the Islamic Religion in Perak.

Mohd Annuar said that in conjunction with the exhibition, photography workshops would also be held daily free for the public. The workshops are jointly organised by Bernama, Ecaz Studio and the National Youth Skills Institute.

“The first workshop will kick off on Aug 4 and will run from 2.30pm to 5.30pm. Subsequent workshops will start at 10.30am and end at 4.30pm, except on Aug 9 when it will end at 12.30pm,” he said.

He said that among the topics to be covered were digital photo technology, new graphics systems, the use of photos in graphics, new products in the photo industry as well as tips on basic photography.

There will also be training on Apple Computer`s iPhoto and Aperture applications, easier methods to produce a photo souvenir book, ways to create a photo web and techniques to manage a mobile photo studio.

Mohd Annuar said those interested in participating could register at the Bernama counter at the Town Hall a day before the workshop starts. The workshops are open to the first 30 people who register on a first-come first-served basis.

Apart from the photo exhibition and workshops, organisations including Bernama, the National Archives, Galeri Sultan Azlan Shah, the Education Department and the Northern Corridor Implementation Authority (NCIA) will also display information on their services.

Quiz sessions will also be held based on the exhibits, and visitors providing the correct answers stand to win prizes.
