Singapore Holds 44th National Day Celebration At Marina Bay

Singapore Holds 44th National Day Celebration At Marina Bay

Singapore - Singapore celebrated its 44th National Day with a spectacular procession and performance which traced the history of the island nation on a floating stage at the Marina Bay on Sunday night.

About 30,000 people with tickets only could watch the stage performance from close range while thousands others had to see it from afar around the bay or from the live television broadcast.

The performance started with how the island got its name, followed by another to show how Singapore could defend itself against enemy attacks by its military force, army tanks, fighter planes and helicopters, and then a procession by the uniformed bodies and dance and song performances.

Before that, a team from the commando unit performed parachute jumping right onto the floating stage followed by a Chinook helicopter flying low carrying a large red-and-white flag of Singapore.

The stage performance was witnessed by Singapore President S.R. Nathan who had also inspected the guard-of-honour mounted by the army and police while 21 gun salutes were fired from several boats berthed in the bay.

It was also watched by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and former prime ministers Lee Kuan Yew and Goh Chok Tong.

The night`s celebration ended with a colourful fireworks display.
