Government To Review Mara`s Role - Shafie
Melaka, Malaysia - Rural and Regional Development Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal said the role of Mara in the development of bumiputera would be reviewed by the government to improve its framework.
Shafie said among the priorities would be education and entrepreneurship to ensure that the Malays and bumiputera played a bigger role in these sectors.
He said a committee comprising academicians and corporate figures -- known as a special focus group -- was formed to discuss the best mechanism required to improve their current role.
Shafie said all inputs obtained by the group would be used as a guideline to outline Mara`s direction and approach in achieving their goal.
“When the restructure is carried out, I want to emphasise on two areas - education and entrepreneurship,” he told reporters after opening the Kota Melaka Umno division delegates meeting last night.
He said the measure was part of the government`s continuous efforts to improve Mara as a framework to carry out the Malay and bumiputera agenda.
Meanwhile, Shafie who is also Umno vice president said leaders and Umno members at all levels must inculcate the culture of serving the community.
Serving the community voluntarily would not require any monetary allocation, for example, there are many well educated members in Umno and they can conduct free tuition classes to children in villages.
“As for a place, they can use the community hall or the Umno division office or schools. And by involving their parents in such programmes, it will help showcase Umno`s struggles and service to their children and community,” he said.
