Hanoi, Vietnam - National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Phu Trong and Indonesian Speaker of the House of Representatives Agung Laksono Soemono have expressed the desire to boost the traditional friendship and cooperation between the two countries.

The two leaders reached a consensus during their talks in Hanoi on August 19 as part of an official working visit to Vietnam by the Indonesian Speaker of House of Representatives from August 18-20.

NA Chairman Trong briefed his guest of Vietnam`s socio-economic development, especially the country`s measures to overcome the adverse impact of the global financial crisis.

He continued with the country`s open, diversified and multi-lateral foreign policy and the Vietnam National Assembly`s efforts to expand cooperation with other countries` parliaments as well as take part in regional and international inter-parliamentary forums.

The NA Chairman praised Indonesia`s important role in geo-politics and geo-economics in the region and in the world, its long-standing traditional culture, widespread foreign relations and its development potential. He also spoke highly of the progress made in bilateral cooperation in education and training, national defense and security.

The NA Chairman expressed his hope that the two countries will sign cooperation agreements to boost the development of joint efforts in these fields as soon as possible, and also that Indonesia will continue granting scholarships to Vietnamese students and that the Indonesian parliament will work with and assist Vietnam to fulfill its role as President of the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA) in the 2009-2010 term.

For his part, Speaker Agung Laksono Soemono congratulated Vietnam on its efforts to maintain the country`s economic growth and called on the country as AIPA President to boost the development of the organization.

He expressed his gratitude for Vietnam`s support for Indonesia at regional and international forums and said that the two sides should continue to strengthen cooperation in economy, trade and investment as well as boost the exchange of experience between the two parliaments.

The two legislative bodies` leaders also exchanged their opinions on issues of mutual concern including drawing up, enacting and enforcing policies to create more favorable conditions for foreign investors; guaranteeing gender equality through preferential taxes for businesses that use many female workers; and increasing the number of female members of parliament.

Also on August 19, Indonesian House of Representatives Speaker Agung laid wreaths at the Ho Chi Minh mausoleum, and visited Vietnam`s first university, Van Mieu-Quoc Tu Giam and Vietnam`s Museum of Ethnography.
