Indo-M`sia Tensions: Leaders Call For Calm

Indo-M`sia Tensions: Leaders Call For Calm

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia - Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein says whatever the situation existing between Malaysia and Indonesia right now, as Home Minister he guarantees the safety of Indonesians who are here in Malaysia.

“I do not see the rationale behind this issue because the people of both countries are living in peace and there has been no basis to cause friction among us.

“These issues brought up are cheap political stunts which will not benefit anybody.

“Malaysians value peace and stability, and so do Indonesians who are here — either to earn a decent living, study or for business opportunities,” he told Malay Mail.

“In fact, they know that Malaysians will not be swayed by such propaganda.”

Other leaders of both countries have also appealed for cooler heads to prevail.

Following Tuesday`s roadblock incident by Benteng Demokrasi Rakyat (People`s Defence of Democracy or Bendera), Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak yesterday said the Indonesian government has promised to ensure the safety of Malaysians in the republic.

“I have conveyed to Pak Try Sutrisno (Indonesian Eminent Persons Group delegation leader, Gen (Rtd) Tan Sri Try Sutrisno) Malaysia`s worry about the safety of Malaysian citizens in Indonesia and he has promised to bring it up with the Indonesian government,” said Najib.

The Bendera group had set up a roadblock on Jalan Diponegoro, just outside its headquarters in central Jakarta, armed with sharpened bamboo poles and sought to detain Malaysians using the road there.

While no Malaysian was found, the self-proclaimed nationalistic vigilantes still got some Indonesian media attention, and now ours as well.

Bernama reported that Information, Communication and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim said his ministry would continue with its programmes to forge closer relations between the people of both countries. Najiah Najib
