Denied bail: Jais officers accompanying Abdul Kahar (right)
out of the Syariah High Court in Shah Alam yesterday.

Shah Alam, Malaysia - A fugitive deviationist sect leader who proclaimed himself as Rasul Melayu (Malay prophet) will spend Hari Raya Aidilfitri behind bars.

The Syariah High Court here has ordered Abdul Kahar Ahmad, 59, to be held at the Sungai Buloh prison pending the hearing of his case on Oct 7.

Judge Abu Zaky Mohammad denied bail after syariah chief prosecutor Abdul Shukor Abd Hamid told him that Abdul Kahar had been evading the law since 2006.

Abdul Kahar was arrested by a team of Selangor Religious Department enforcement officers in Sungai Long, Kajang at 9.45am yesterday.

Over the past three years, he had allegedly preached the deviationist Pengajaran Kahar Ahmad while playing hide-and-seek with the law.

Syariah judge Abu Zaky Mohammad gave the order after allowing Selangor syariah chief prosecutor Abdul Shukor Abd Hamid`s application against Abdul Kahar who faces five charges under the Selangor Syariah Criminal Enactment.

The judge also fixed Sept 24 for mention to extend Abdul Kahar`s detention until the hearing.

Earlier, Abdul Kahar told the court that he had gone into hiding as he had received death threats.

He urged the court to grant him bail to enable him to celebrate Aidilfitri with his family.

Abdul Kahar faced charges of proclaiming himself as a prophet for the Malays, conducting deviationist teachings, violating the Selangor Mufi`s order, blasphemy and spreading false belief.

He was accused of committing the offences at No: 44, Jalan Bunga Ros, Kampung Kemensah in Hulu Klang between May 19 and June 23, 2005.
