Language Attache Proposed For Malaysian Missions Abroad

Language Attache Proposed For Malaysian Missions Abroad

Johor Baharu, Malaysia - The creation of a Malay Language Attache by the Foreign Ministry at the Malaysian missions abroad was proposed Monday in efforts to spread the language as an international language.

Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman, in making the proposal, said the official appointed for the post should not only have a good command of the language but also be knowledgeable in the Malay culture.

“The official concerned will assist the Education, Economic and Military Attaches. Their tasks will include opening up Malay Language classes at the Malaysian Embassies which will help to expand the Malay Language as an international language,” he said when delivering his keynote address at the international conference entitled `The Malay Language, A World Language`, here.

The conference was organised by the Academy of Malay Studies of the University of Malaya; Language Faculty of the Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris; and the Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka with the cooperation of the Johor Heritage Foundation.

Abdul Ghani said that in the initial stage, the attache could be assigned to the Malaysian Embassy in Bangkok and the Malaysian Consulate in Songkhla, Thailand, besides the Malaysian missions in Sri Lanka, South Africa, the Philippines and Cambodia.
