Berkhatam Al-Quran Ceremony (The Ceremony upon Completion of Reading of the Quran) (Malaysia)
Malay society views the holy Quran as a guideline of life that rules all dimensions of human life whether at an individual or collective level. Therefore, teaching the way of reading of the Quran and its essence is an obligation of the parents. One of Malay pantuns says:
Buai tinggi-tinggi,
Sampai cucur atap,
Belum tumbuh gigi,
Sudah pandai baca kitab.
According to the Malay history, many years ago all of the parents entrusted religious teachers to teach their children both the way of reading of the Quran and the Islamic knowledge. In addition, many of them sent their children to pesantrens or Islamic boarding schools for the same purpose. But now the condition has changed, the parents neither send their children to those Islamic boarding schools nor entrust the religious teachers, but they prefer to teach them by themselves.
After completing the reading of the Quran, the parents, more often than not, perform the ceremony of khatamul Quran. This portal explains several aspects encompassed within the ceremony.

2. The Way of Performing the Ceremony
The ceremony is always held at the host‘s house. In the beginning of the ceremony, usually the kid, who has completed the reading of the Quran, reads the last verses of the Quran, from Adh-Duha to An-Nas, in front of all guests and the religious teachers. Prayers are then recited by him or who is considered of being religious, at the end of the ceremony. Afterwards, all guests are allowed to taste foods and drinks as a sign of the thankfulness of the host for their coming.
