New Malay Language Centre to enhance professional development of teachers

New Malay Language Centre to enhance professional development of teachers

Singapore - A new Malay Language Centre will be set up to enhance the professional development of teachers.

Currently, training for Malay language teachers is held only on an ad hoc basis.

With the new facility, to be located at the MOE Language Centre in Bishan, there will be more courses and mentoring programmes.

The aim is to facilitate better teaching and learning of the Malay language, especially since more students are coming from English-speaking homes.

The centre opens in July, and it hopes to train about 650 Malay language teachers this year.

There are currently 1,300 Malay language teachers in Singapore.

Masagos Zulkifli, Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Education and Home Affairs, said: "It is important for us to look at it holistically, and over the long term, the trends that will probably emerge and the challenges we may face when we teach the Malay language over the years.

"That is why we need to centralise the planning... over how we can develop teachers, especially after their service training, so that there is constant development." - CNA/ms (Nurfadhilla Kamarul)
