Cultural Diversity Source of Country’s Strength
Johor Baharu, Malaysia - The country's cultural diversity provides the strength for Malaysia to continue to progress, develop and prosper, Menteri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman said.
As such, he said, the country's diverse culture should be accepted, recognised and respected by all the communities.
"The culture of every race in the country is a rich heritage which should be practised, preserved and developed, without sidelining any ethnic group, to maintain harmony and unity.
"Malaysians should know and understand the culture of all races in this country as it could foster goodwill among them and to achieve the objectives of the 1Malaysia concept introduced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak," he said in his speech when representing the prime minister in opening the Malaysian Chinese Cultural Festival, here Saturday.
Various performances were held for the opening ceremony, which included a performance by about 2,500 dancers tracing the history and progress of the Chinese community in Malaysia.
Other activities organised in conjunction with the festival include an exhibition on the Chinese cultural village, calligraphy course, a Mandarin debate competition between institutions of higher learning in Malaysia and Singapore, and a conference on museum management.
