Indonesian Government Backs “Sydney to Hobart of the West”
Sidney, Austrlia - Fremantle Sailing Club has welcomed the Indonesian Government as a major sponsor of the Fremantle to Bali Yacht Race and Rally scheduled for 2011. Two days before the race starts, there will be a Visit Indonesia Festival to celebrate Indonesian culture, with traditional food, entertainment and culture.
As previously reported in the Gazette, the race will make a comeback in April next year, comprising two events – the ocean rally and the international yacht race. The event is two-and-a-half times the distance of the Sydney to Hobart race.
Fremantle Sailing Club vice-commodore Kaye Riseley said Visit Indonesia was the major event sponsor through a five-event partnership with the government.
“In partnership with the Indonesian Government Ministry of Culture and Tourism, we look forward to the race becoming the premier offshore sailing event on the WA sailing calendar and possibly even being known as the Sydney to Hobart of the west.”
The club also announced Rolly Tasker, yachting legend and winner of the inaugural race in 1981, as the event’s patron.
Mr Tasker won the event in six days, 15 hours and 39 minutes, the record for the fastest finishing time.
The organisers said there were a variety of high-profile competitors confirmed for the event, including many top WA-based ocean racers.
