The race yesterday was co-organised by the 2009 South East Asia Leadership Youth Programme (SEAYLP) Alumni "Golden Kris" and the International Unit at the Department of Schools.

The ministry through the schools, he added, have come up with various initiative to ensure that our younger generation are exposed to formal and informal education on the importance of preserving Bruneian culture.
"It's without doubt that the action taken by the Golden Kris in organising "Rediscover Brunei Race" is indeed a testimony to yet another similar initiative," said Hj Suhaila.
One of the goals of SEAYLP was to produce a Community Action Plan, that would raise awareness among the youth in appreciating the rich and unique diversity of Brunei culture, a project which Golden Kris undertook and resulted in the "Rediscover Brunei Race" event.
"With the theme of 'Culture: A Treasure for the Youth', the race aims to encourage and enhance youths' appreciations and understanding towards our own heritage. This in turn, can help to boost the economy and tourism in Brunei through community project," said Hj Suhaili.
The acting permanent secretary also noted the involvement of about 65 students as the working committee.
"This race not only provides a platform for these volunteers to nurture their leadership skills but also to be pro-active and think constructively in shouldering the responsibilities given," he said.
In return, he added, this would instill qualities of leaders who were ambitious, strong, competitive, creative, innovative and responsive. These are the desired qualities in line with the National Education System, SPN21.
"I personally hope that this event can be sustained not only to create awareness but also to inculcate the values and culture of our beloved Brunei," he said.
In his welcoming remarks, Alexander L Barrasso, Charge d'Affaires at the Embassy of the United States of America in Brunei said that the SEAYLP had successfully accomplished many key goals, among which the increase in cultural understanding between two countries, which was of the most significant.
