Compilation of Malay Folk Songs for Children
Singapore - An album has been recorded of 25 Malay folk songs for children. It is by the Malay Language Council to commemorate the Malay Language Month in July. The Malay Language Month was held once every two years before this.
The album was launched on Saturday by Minister for the Environment and Water Resources, Dr Vivian Balakrishnan.
Organisers said it is to ensure the Malay language and heritage is passed on to the next generation.
Dr Balakrishnan said the younger generation needs to be guided and provided with the right environment to use their mother tongue. This is because English is more widely used by Singaporeans and need encouragement to use their mother tongue language when they have the opportunities to do so.
One of the new features added to the Malay Language Council Website - a segment called "Sebut Tepat", by MediaCorp's Malay news presenter.
This is the second Malay language month and organisers said it will be an annual event due to the positive response and support from the community after last year's event.
