National Day Parades Held On Smaller Scale

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia - National Day celebrations were held on a smaller scale throughout the country.

In Ipoh, a group of about 20 people decked in traditional costumes paraded past Sultan Azlan Shah, the Regent Raja Dr Nazrin Shah, Raja DiHilir Perak Raja Jaafar Raja Muda Musa and Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Said.

“It is important that we stick together as Malaysians to survive challenges of the future,” said Dr Zambry.

In Bukit Mertajam, Penang Yang di-Pertua Negri Tun Abdul Rahman Abbas, Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng and state dignitaries joined the people in an hour-long state-level National Day parade.

After inspecting a guard of honour, Abdul Rahman and the VIPs witnessed a marchpast by 67 contingents comprising 4,399 participants.

Four of the contingents wore surgical masks as part of their costumes to promote its use due to the flu pandemic.

In Malacca, the celebrations were held indoors at the Malacca International Trade Centre`s main hall in Ayer Keroh.

Some 4,000 participants representing 88 contingents were screened before the start of the hour-long event at 8.30am. Malaccca Yang diPertua Negri Tun Mohd Khalil Yaakob joined Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam and state leaders at the event.

In Kota Kinabalu, a total of 900 people in 37 contingents participated in the celebrations held for the first time at the Likas Sports Complex.

Sabah Yang di-Pertua Negri Tun Ahmadshah Abdullah inspected a guard-of-honour mounted by the Royal Malay Regiment.

In Kota Baru, 52 state and federal government departments comprising 1,855 participants were involved in the parade. Mentri Besar Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat led the dignitaries.
