Culture Of Integrity Vital To Nation’s Development

Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei Darussalam - The culture of integrity is important as it is the key to developing good governance towards the eradication of corruption, said the Minister of Energy Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Dewa Major General (R) Dato Seri Pahlawan Awang Haji Mohammad bin Haji Daud during the opening of the "Integrity in the Public Service" seminar at the Rizqun Hotel, Gadong.

"It is integrity that can enhance the country's image."It breeds transparency, a ccountability and quality service," the minister explained. Upon noting that the meaning of integrity is diverse, Pehin Dato Haji Mohammad shared that the concept of integrity "is constantly understood and is related to values of honesty, trust, fairness as well as reliability".

With the establishment of the Integrity and Good Governance Centre at the Anti-Corruption Bureau, the minister hopes that other ministries and departments will support the centre's aim in "instilling the values of integrity in the Public Service" as well as "a way to fight corruption", corresponding with the Institution Development Strategy for the nation's 2035 vision, which is to maintain the nation's high standard of governance in both the government and private sectors.

The minister also added that other Institution Development strategies include developing a modern and effective public service that "can carry the nation's development, to create quality public service and to reduce red tape". Pehin Dato Haji Mohammad stated that the public service is one of the main institutions that aid the government and provides services for the public, thus making it "the backbone of the nation's administration that is constantly faced with expectations".

He added, "To achieve quality in realising and maintaining a public service that is efficient, effective, honest and reliable is vital." Also, the minister further highlighted the government's persistence in maintaining its integrity in terms of finances through the establishment of internal audits in ministries as well as government departments, stating that,

"It does not only assist in administrating as well as managing finances but also helps in preventing and controlling against breaches of trust, embezzlement, abuse, waste as well as excess." The minister also took the opportunity to remind public service personnel to play a role in maintaining integrity and urged them to "practise being positive and accept other views whilst constantly striving to improve by following practised work procedures".

Furthermore, "Leadership also plays an important role in introducing integrity values to ensure that the Public Service is in line with Brunei's 2035 Vision." -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin (Siti Hajar)
