Makassar Culture in Australia

Makassar Culture in Australia

Jakarta, Indonesia - The Sandeq Expedition, to be organized in September, is not only looking for adventure.

The students of Universitas Hasanuddin University want to conduct cultural and maritime studies of fisherman and Australian sea cucumber searchers.

“Before determining the routes, we have conducted literary researches and have found those who travel through these routes,” said Guswan, a member of the Sandeq Expedition team.

People from Makassar call Australian coastal areas Marege.

In Dutch and English records, communities from both areas have conducted cultural and trade relations since 16th century.

Makassar culture still existing in the Northern Australian coast areas are small boats lepa-lepa and some tools to look for iron ore and smoking pipes.

The latter is usually filled with tobacco by Aborigine people.

One of the researches on Makassar travel routes in Marege was conducted by Australian historian Peter Spillet in 1980.

Spillet reconstructed Makassar people’s arrival to Marege and Darwin using Padewakkang boats.

The Spillet road is the one Hasanuddin University students want to explore to go to Australia.

“Spillet wanted to reconstruct Padewakkang through Makassar to Australia in the Nusa Tenggara Islands.” he said.
