Sail Banda foreign guests to be provided with guides

Sail Banda foreign guests to be provided with guides

Ambon, Indonesia - Sail Banda participants, spectators, and foreign tourists who want to explore Ambon and environs need not worry they will get lost as guides will be ready to take them around, a tourism official said.

Maluku Culture and Tourism Office spokesperson Florence Sahusilawane said here on Thursday her office had trained 74 tourist guides to be posted in various public service areas to help make the international marine event of Sail Banda a success.

Sail Banda is scheduled to run from July 24 -August 17, 2010.

Sahusilawane said the 74 select tourist guides from the Indonesian Tourist Guide Association (HPI) have been trained to be interpreters at international conferences and seminars to support Sail Banda 2010.

"They are also going to be posted at public service centers such as the airport, seaport, and hotels in Ambon," Sahusilawane said, explaining that the tourist guides were good not only at foreign languages but also had knowledge about Maluku tourism information, culture, and arts.

In light of this, she said they were expected to be professional interpreters with the capability to introduce the province`s rich potentials to Sail Banda participants, spectators, and even foreign tourists who had come for the event.

However, Sahusilawane added that her office still needed more tourist guides because during the international marine event the province was expected to be visited by around 5,000 domestic and foreign tourists.

"We need at least 100 professional tourist guides to be posted in Banda and Ambon because a multitude of foreign tourists will come for Sail Banda," Sahusilawane said.

She said that besides various cultural and art performances, Sail Banda-related activities would also include an archeological exhibition organized by Siwalima Museum, a traditional Kora-kora boat race, and documentary film show about Banda. (Uu.O001/HAJM/F001)
