Maintain Floria Festival In National Calendar

Putrajaya, Malaysia - The Putrajaya Flower and Garden Festival 2010 (Floria 2010) should become a permanent event on the national calendar of events as an effort to promote Malaysia.

Former Prime Minister Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said the festival was in a class of its own and made an impact at all levels of society.

"Since it was first held two years ago, the event has now flourished and showcases the country's beauty to the public, especially foreigners.

"Although it may not be on par with similar festivals abroad such as in Chelsea, United Kingdom, it is still unique with its array of flora and tropical plants that are not available in Western countries," he told reporters here Monday after a visit to Floria 2010 with his wife, Tun Jeanne Abdullah and accompanied by Putrajaya Corporation chairman Tan Sri Samsudin Osman.

Jeanne, who is also Malaysian Landscape Advisory Panel chairman, said the younger generation must be instilled with love for the forest and natural environment, which can then be developed into a career in the forestry sector.

"Most of the new generation have never entered our forests and they don't know what is in it. Forests are a gift for us and contain all kinds of benefits," she said.

Malaysian Landscape, which also took part in the festival, clinched two gold medals for the Garden Award's corporate category and the Starlight Award.
