SMPDSM Wins Group Story Telling Competition
Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei Darussalam- The team from Pehin Dato Seri Maharaja Secondary School Mentiri won the hearts of judges with their story telling performance and took first place in a group story telling competition yesterday.
Two groups from the Youth Library Services came first and second runner-ups respectively.
The competition saw Permanent Secretary II at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports Dato Paduka Hj Mohd Hamid Hj Mohd Jaafar as the guest of honour.
The event began with the recital of the surah al-fatihah and doa.
The Acting Director of the Language and Literature Bureau and the Permanent Secretary spoke at the event. The three top groups showcased their titles.
The panel of judges comprised local professionals in the local arts community: UBD Lecturer Mohd Zefri Ariff Mohd Zain Ariff or better known as Zefri Ariff Brunei, DBP's Abd Malek Hj Metarsat and Postal Superintendent (training) Maimon Hj Abu Bakar.
Group Story Telling is a theatrical or stage drama, a media communication providing effective information to the audience. The competition is an annual project of the Library Section of the Language and Literature Bureau.
It continues the Story Telling Competition organised for secondary students, particularly youths between 12 and 21 years old.
This activity is aimed at presenting a short drama or sketch characterising local arts in the story's delivery and actions.
The competition serves as a stage theatre or drama and hopes to bring together potential youths to showcase their in story telling prowess.
With the theme "Membaca Nadi Kejayaan Bangsa" (Reading the Nation's Successful Pulse), the event encourages youths to love books, be a platform for youths in achieving their level of intelligence and development, and provides a training arena for youths to become a "berwibawa' Bruneian.
It's aimed at establishing cooperation between the Library section and other departments, schools in particular, and help instil interest among youth to develop local arts that is becoming less attractive of late due to other media competitions, be an effective communication in interacting among their fellow youths and share with the audience and a medium of communication in teamwork cooperation and in disseminating information to the audience.
The competition was open to groups of six from schools, colleges, clubs and associations comprising Brunei citizens between 12 and 21 years old and must be a member of the National Library.
They were required to narrate the story in the local dialect.
The narrator must deliver the story using one of the traditional arts of story telling in just 15 to 20 minutes time.
