Bureau to Produce Statistics to Assess Students’ Mastery of Malay Language
Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei Darussalam - The Language and Literature Bureau plan to come up with statistics on the development, progress and mastery of the usage and application of the Bahasa Melayu based on the results of the Mekar/Juara Pelajar Magazine Writing Competition.
"In the years ahead, to encourage more participation and to assess how the Malay language proficiency through essay writing among the students, the department will provide forms that are published in Mekar and Juara Pelajar magazines," said Hjh Aminah Hj Momin, the acting director of the Language and Literature Bureau (LLB) on Monday.
She hoped that this noble intention by the department in looking at the users and rightful usage of Malay language especially amongst the youth in this country can be achieved through the contest.
The contest will also train the youth to develop the knowledge they have learnt through school and generate innovative and creative ideas that may contribute to more big hearted youths in the Sultanate.
With this year's theme of "Actions to Financial Planning", Hjh Aminah said that early education in a child will enable them as students to practice the habit of saving and spending less daily which can have a positive impact on our communities by preventing them from becoming what she referred to as 'the habit of asking'.
"The presence of this book will enable us to educate and cultivate the students of our nation especially the citizens to make wise financial plans beginning from childhood," she said.
The Mekar/Juara Pelajar Magazine Writing Contest is an annual event where students throughout the Sultanate are invited to contribute compositions according to their respective categories and compete to get their work published in the monthly magazine.
The contest was divided into three categories according to the levels of education of the students such as primary, lower secondary and upper secondary.
Speaking to The Brunei Times as champion winner of Category C of upper secondary was Dk Siti Serbanun Pg Hidup from Paduka Seri Begawan Sultan Science College (Maktab Sains). "Of course I am very happy because I didn't expect this at first," she said adding that the school had not inform her of her position and was shocked when her name was announced.
The tide of her composition that she submitted dubbed "Outstanding Youth Support Financial Planning", which she said was about the importance of youths saving up for a better future and as a result, earned a 72.3 percentage.
It took her two hours to complete her composition and was rewarded a $500 savings account sponsored by Standard Chartered Bank, a certificate of appreciation, $100 worth of cash, a plaque along with a backpack with a Juara Pelajar magazine.
Other first place winners for the other categories was Amal Nabilah Hj Hussin with a percentage of 71 per cent and Hjh Muniatey Hj Abdul Rahman with a score of 75.3 for category A and B respectively.
Presenting the prizes as the guest of honour was Datin Hjh Adina Othman, deputy minister of Culture, Youth and Sports who was accompanied by event sponsors, Hj Mohd Don Hj Abdul Harald, acting managing director of TAP and Danny Quah, chief executive officer of Standard Chartered Bank.
