Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei Darussalam - Some 42 new converts who completed recitals of the Quran's 30 juzuk were celebrated yesterday in a khatam al-Quran held at the Islamic Dakwah Centre's Conference Hall.
Coming from all four districts of the country, they were members of the Converts Guidance Course, the Arts of al-Quran Course and Quran Advance Level Scheme, organised by the Islamic Dakwah Centre.
Meanwhile, the ceremony itself was organised by the centre's Conversion and Muallaf Rehabilitation Unit. The event's guest of honour was Datin Hjh Adina Othman, the Deputy Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports.
Also present were Ustazah Hasnah Hj Omar, Director of the Islamic Dakwah Centre, the Acting Deputy Director, officers and staff from the centre, as well as friends and family members of the converts.
It began with a recital of the surah al Fatihah led by Muhd Abd Halim Abdullah Lim @Lim Yon Chai. This was followed by a mass recitation of the Juz `Amma' to complete the khatam by the new converts.

Students from the SUAMRIPAD then read the takhtim, before a doa khatam from Muhd Nafis @Najib Muhd Sanif and a dzikir marhaban was recited by the centre's officers and staff members to bless the khatam participants.
The guest of honour later led a sprinkling of the `Bunga Rampai' (scented flowers) on the converts before presenting them with certificates and gifts. The religious function ended with a reading of the doa selamat led by Muskrisman Safari Hj Mustafa and officers from the Islamic Dakwah Centre.
The khatam ceremony aimed to act as a platform for the new converts not only to upgrade their Islamic knowledge but also for them to be well-versed in Quran reading. It was hoped that it would also create an enthusiasm for learning that will continue long after the event.
