Brunei Darussalam should Preserve its Inherited Literary Tradition

Brunei Darussalam - As a nation that upholds the Malay, Islamic, Monarchy philosophy, Brunei Darussalam should preserve its inherited literary tradition. Preservation of culture and tradition should not only be in the form of documentation alone but also through reading, application and study of the early Malay traditional literature. Yang Di Pertua of Adat Istiadat Negara, Yang Amat Mulia Pengiran Lela Cheteria Sahibun Najabah Pengiran Anak Haji Abdul Aziz made the sabda in his address at the Final of the Declamation of Syair on Brunei State Constitution Competition for Secondary Schools as well as Government and Private Sixth Form Centres.

Yang Amat Mulia, in the sabda, added that the effort of the Malay, Islamic Monarchy Executive Council in holding the Syair Competition is in line with the country's philosophy that maintains allegiance to the king as the sovereign ruler, and upholding the religion and the Malay race, because in the situation in Brunei, the syair has already combined the philosophical values of the nation. In fact relations between the monarch and his subjects have been strongly established through it. The king's ideas, the ruler's ideology and beliefs can been perceived and conveyed effectively through the traditional Malay poem - the syair. It is hoped that we Bruneians brought up with the Bruneian characteristics, will, with confidence and strong determination, try to defend our heritage and self-esteem of our race based on the Malay Islamic Monarchy philosophy in the midst of the current global devolopment.

Speaking of Brunei's renowned syair writer - Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar Ali Saifuddien, the 28th Sultan of Brunei, Yang Amat Mulia in his sabda, stressed that the late Sultan's thoughts that placed great importance to knowledge, suit the present condition of the country that is still categorised as a developming nation that needs citizens who are highly-educated and highly-skilled.

Awang Hazwan bin Haji Salim from the Hassanal Bolkiah Boys' Secondary School, emerged as the champion among the Sixth Form Centre Students. The champion took home the Challenge Trophy contributed by the Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah Foundation and a 400 dollar cash prize.

Meanwhile, for the Secondary School, the winner was Dayang Syahmina binti Osman of the Sultan Hassanal Secondary School, Temburong. She received a cash prize of 350 dollars.
