Call to Preserve Malay Language
Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei Darussalam- The Malay culture is the basis of the development of the Malay civilisation and the erosion of cultural practices in the nation will have an impact on civilisation, said Dr Mataim Bakar Director of Research, Development and International Affairs, Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports.
He spoke at the launching of the "Pelestarian Budaya Melayu Melalui Penulisan Puisi dan Pementasan Seni" workshop held at the Language and Literature Bureau.
To preserve the national culture is a collective responsibility of not only practitioners but everyone especially parents, school authorities, the government agencies and the non-governmental organisations.
He said the Language and Literature Bureau's task is to expose the public to a better appreciation of the importance of their own culture, particularly those related to language and literature.
He said that these two things need to be strengthened. Along with continuous efforts to become a modem and prosperous country, there must be serious efforts to maintain the culture and uphold the roots of our society.
He called for the Language and Literature Bureau to continue to elevate and uphold the Malay language for it is the nation's treasure and should be preserved and maintained.
The Malay language is the official language in the constitution of the country and is also a vital element in Brunei Darussalam's philosophy Malay Islamic Monarchy (MIB).
"Efforts towards enhancing the Malay language is also related to the preservation of the Malay culture.
The Malay language as the language of other countries not only supports communication and information, but also on a much larger scale, which is the role of the language itself in nation building," he said.
He said the function of Malay as the official language in the development of a civilisation is very clear.
As a means of communication, language is not just talking about the linguistic aspects of grammar, tone, style and spelling pronunciation, but also reveals the thoughts, ideals, ideas of mind, philosophy of culture and moral values.
He said the Malay language also contains aspects of consciousness, awareness and concern.
The Malay language also serves as an educational tool for teaching and understanding.
He talked about the emergence of cultural integration in the social and cultural development and the desire of a group of individuals to integrate the various cultures into a new brand under the guise of globalisation.
